Die Harfensträucher (Plectranthus) bilden eine Pflanzengattung in der Familie der Lippenblütler (Lamiaceae). Der Gattungsname Plectranthus leitet sich aus dem griechischen plektron für Sporn und anthos für Blume ab, bedeutet übersetzt also „Spornblume“, da die Blüten an ihrer Basis eine Röhre (= Sporn) aufweisen. Wegen des Geruches der Pflanze werden viele Arten auch Mottenkönig genannt.

Pflanzenbeschreibung

Es sind mehrjährige krautige Pflanzen. Sie sind in Mitteleuropa nicht winterhart; eine Ausnahme bildet lediglich die bis ca. -15°C winterharte Art Plectranthus excisus. Auch einige sukkulente Arten finden sich in dieser Gattung. Meist verströmen sie einen mehr oder weniger angenehmen, relativ intensiven Duft.

Einzelne Arten und ihre Verwendung

Die Harfensträucher, von denen viele Arten aus Afrika oder Südostasien stammen, werden vielfältig verwendet. Insbesondere die Zuchtformen mit weißen oder cremegelben Blatträndern oder Panaschierungen werden sehr häufig als Strukturpflanze zur Auflockerung und Neutralisierung von Kontrastfarben zwischen blühende Balkonpflanzen gesetzt. Am bekanntesten sind hier die rasch wachsenden P. glabratus und P. forsteri, deren zahlreiche Hybriden mit weiteren Plectranthus-Arten meist unter dem Sammelnamen „Weihrauch“, „Weihrauchkraut“ oder „Mottenkönig“ in verschiedensten Zuchtsorten im Handel sind. Der letztgenannte Name deutet schon an, dass die Pflanze auf Motten und Mücken vertreibend wirken soll. Dieser „Weihrauch“ darf nicht mit dem echten Weihrauch (Boswellia) verwechselt werden, auch wenn sein Duft ähnlich ist.

Andere Arten der Harfensträucher werden als Gewürzpflanzen verwendet, zum Beispiel P. amboinicus (eine der vielen Pflanzenarten, die – botanisch falsch – als Mexikanischer Oregano betitelt werden).

In den letzten Jahren ist insbesondere im deutschsprachigen Raum die Verpiss-dich-Pflanze, eine Hybride von Plectranthus caninus, bekannt geworden, die vertreibend gegen Hunde und Katzen wirken soll. Die Wirkung der ätherischen Duftstoffe dieser schnellwachsenden, als reine Blattpflanze im Handel befindlichen Kreuzung ist jedoch stark von der Witterung abhängig.

In der Pflege der Pflanzen ist zu beachten, dass Staunässe und zu wenig Licht schnell zu Fäulnis und Blattfall führen; zu pralle Sonne kann braune Blattflecken (Verbrennungen) verursachen.

Beachte: Coleus, wie früher die Buntnessel-Arten genannt wurden, ist ein veralteter Name synonym zu Plectranthus, weswegen die bislang unter falscher Gattung laufenden Buntnessel-Arten einen neuen Namen erhalten mussten (Solenostemon).

Die Gattung Plectranthus umfasst etwa 350 Arten.^[1] Die Erstbeschreibung von Charles Louis L'Héritier de Brutelle wurde 1788 veröffentlicht.^[2].
