Hippel, auch Hiepel und Hipel, ist der Familienname mehrerer Personen. Früheste Erwähnungen gab es im Landkreis Heilsberg im Ostpreußen.

Namensdeutungen

  1. Für den Großteil der Namensträger sollte eine Berufsbezeichnung vorliegen, die auf mittelhochdeutsch hip(p)e, hipelin ,,zusammengerollter, oblatenförmiger Kuchen’’ beruht und den Verkäufer oder Bäcker von Waffeln bezeichnet. [1]
  2. Seltener greift auch eine Erklärung als indirekter Berufsname, der auf die Arbeit des Vorfahren mit einer Hippe, hip(p)e, hibbe (Sichelmesser, gekrümmtes Gartenmesser, Hackmesser) Bezug nimmt. Die Bildung des Namens mit Hilfe der Verkleinerungsendung -el verweist darauf, dass dieser aus der westmitteldeutschen, fränkischen, thüringischen oder obersächsischen Sprache gebildet wurde.
