Hop Sing

Victor Sen Yung war der Künstlername von Sen Yew Cheung (* 18. Oktober 1915 in San Francisco, Kalifornien; † 9. November 1980 in North Hollywood, Kalifornien) einem US-amerikanischen Schauspieler chinesischer Abstammung.

Biografie

Als seine Mutter 1919 bei der Grippe-Epidemie starb, kamen er und seine Schwester in eine Kinderkrippe. Sein Vater kehrte in die Heimat zurück, und kam Mitte der 1920er, nachdem er erneut geheiratet hatte, wieder in die USA.

Im Alter von 12 Jahren begann er als Houseboy bei einer Familie in Nob Hill. [1] Er studierte dann Tierhaltung an der Universität von Kalifornien in Berkeley. 1938 begann er mit der Schauspielerei unter dem Namen Victor Yung. Daneben arbeitete er für eine Chemiefirma und brachte Proben eines Flammenschutzmittels zur 20th Century Fox, um sie zu verkaufen. Anstatt die Chemikalien zu kaufen, casteten sie ihn für die Rolle Charlie Chans Sohn Nummer 2, als der er daraufhin in 12 Chan-Filmen mitspielte, später als Sohn Nr. 1. Bekannt wurde er auch als der Koch Hop Sing auf der Ponderosa Ranch in der Fernsehserie Bonanza.

Im Jahr 1974 veröffentlichte er ein Buch über cantonesisches Kochen mit dem Titel "Great Wok Cookbook" (Nash Publishing).

Victor Sen Yung starb am 9. November 1980 durch einen Unfall, er erstickte infolge eines Gaslecks.
