Hospitaler

Ursprünglich ist der Hospitalarius ein Geistlicher, der das Armen- und Krankenhaus (Hospital) an Stiften und Klöstern betreut.

Die Hospitaler wurden zur Zeit der Kreuzzüge zur Kollektivbezeichnung für die neuen Orden, die im Pilger- und Krankendienst standen, so zum Beispiel der Deutsche Orden, die Johanniter (der spätere Malteserorden), der Jakobusorden und viele weitere Brüder und Schwesterngemeinschaften.

Orden der Hospitaler wurden noch bis ins 19. Jahrhundert gegründet.
