Der lineare Absorptionskoeffizient μ beschreibt, wie stark monochromatische Röntgenstrahlung beim Durchdringen von Materie entlang des durchstrahlten Wegs abgeschwächt wird. Die Medizin interessiert sich im Rahmen der Computertomografie besonders dafür, die Schwächung der Röntgenstrahlung bestimmten Geweben zuzuordnen und darüber pathologische Abweichungen von gesundem Gewebe feststellen zu können. Dazu hat der englische Nobelpreisträger Godfrey Hounsfield die CT-Zahl vorgeschlagen, um unabhängig von den energieabhängigen Schwächungskoeffizienten zu sein. Diese wird für ein bestimmtes Material (Gewebe) so berechnet:

 {[CT-Zahl]\left(\mu_{\rm Gewebe}\right)}:=\frac{\mu_{ \rm Gewebe}-\mu_{ \rm Wasser}} {\mu_{ \rm Wasser}} \cdot 1000

  • Luft absorbiert Röntgenstrahlung nahezu gar nicht und hat daher eine CT-Zahl von -1000 HU (Hounsfield units, auch HE für Hounsfield Einheit).
  • Fettgewebe absorbiert Röntgenstrahlung etwas weniger als Wasser und hat ca. -50 bis -100 HU.
  • Wasser hat gemäß der Definition 0 HU.
  • Knochen haben, je nach Dichte, Werte von 500 - 1000 HU.

Die Skala ist theoretisch nach oben offen. In der Praxis hat sich der Bereich von -1024 HU bis 3071 HU durchgesetzt (12-bit-Zahlen); Metalle können jedoch noch stärkere Absorption bewirken.

Da reale Computertomografen keine monochromatische Strahlung erzeugen, was Voraussetzung für die Angabe von μ wäre, ist die Definition der Hounsfield-Skala nicht ganz unproblematisch.
