Das YIVO an der 16th Street in Manhattan, New York
Das Yidisher visnshaftlekher institut (ייִדישער װיסנשאַפֿטלעכער אינסטיטוט, Akronym: YIVO/ייִוואָ, dt. „Jiddisches (oder Jüdisches) Wissenschaftliches Institut“, englisch YIVO Institute for Jewish Research, früher Yiddish Scientific Institute) wurde 1925 nach Konferenzen in Berlin im damals polnischen Vilnius als akademische Einrichtung zum Studium jiddischer und ostjüdischer Kultur geschaffen.
Zu den Gründern gehörten unter anderem Max Weinreich (1894–1969), Elias Tcherikover (1881–1943) und Nochum Shtif (1879–1933).
Das YIVO wurde durch seine Arbeiten zur jüdischen Geschichte, jiddischen Literatur und jiddischen Orthographie etc. zur Autorität im Bereich der jiddischen Sprache. Zu den Mitarbeitern gehörten unter anderem berühmte Wissenschaftler wie Simon Dubnow und Saul Ginsburg.
Der ursprüngliche Hauptsitz des Institutes war in Vilnius, mit Außenstellen in Berlin, Warschau und New York City. 1940, nach dem Beginn des 2. Weltkrieges, wurde der Sitz nach New York verlegt, bevor die Nationalsozialisten 1941 das Institut in Vilnius plünderten.
In den 1990er Jahren wurde älteres YIVO-Material aus Vilnius nach New York gebracht, das Bibliothekare während der sowjetischen Zeit versteckt hatten.
Heute beherbergt der Hauptsitz in New York eine Bibliothek mit mehr als einer Million Titeln, darunter Manuskripte, seltene Bücher etc. Hier werden auch folgende Periodika herausgegeben: YIVO Bleter (gegründet 1931), Yedies fun YIVO (1929) und Yidishe Sprakh (1941).
