Ire

Iren sind Bewohner der Insel Irland.

Sie sind mehrheitlich katholisch. Über 90 % der Staatsbürger der Republik Irland sind Nachfahren der Kelten. Aber auch die vorkeltischen Bewohner Irlands und von dort im 9. und 10. Jahrhundert eingefallenen Wikinger haben Spuren hinterlassen.

Besonders im Nordosten der Insel gibt es eine protestantische Minderheit, die ihre Wurzeln zum größten Teil auf Einwanderer von der Insel Großbritannien zurückführt.

Irland war Jahrhunderte lang bis in die späten 1980er-Jahre ein Auswanderungsland. Deswegen sind große Teile der Bevölkerung der USA, Kanadas, Australiens und Neuseelands irischer Abstammung, und New York City gilt als die größte irische Stadt der Welt. Viele Nachkommen pflegen auch weiterhin die irischen Traditionen (z. B. Halloween und St. Patrick’s Day) und betonen ihre Abstammung.
