James Kent Scholar

James Kent (* 31. Juli 1763 in Fredericksburg(NY); † 12. Dezember 1847 in New York) war ein US-amerikanischer Jurist.

James Kent wurde Kanzler des höchsten Gerichtshofs in New York, starb dort amt 12. Dezember 1847. Sein klassisches Hauptwerk sind die Commentaries on American law (New York 1826-30, 4 Bde.; 13. Aufl. von C. M. Barnes, Boston 1884).

Ehrungen

  • Nach ihm sind Kent County (Michigan), Kent City (Michigan), das Chicago–Kent College of Law und die Kent Place School, eine Mädchenschule und -Kindergarten in Summit (New Jersey) benannt.
  • Die Chancellor-Kent-Professur an der Columbia Law School der Columbia University in New York City ist ebenfalls nach ihm benannt, wie auch die Kent Hall, das ehemalige Gebäude der Juristischen Fakultät, welches jetzt die Fakultäten für Ostasiatische und nahöstliche Sprachen und Kulturen beherbergt.
  • Studenten der Columbia Law School, welche zu den besten 2 bis 3 % ihres Jahrgangs gehören werden in Erinnerung an den ersten Professor der Rechtswissenschaft der Universität James Kent Scholar genannt.
