Jay and the Americans

Jay & the Americans war eine US-amerikanische Doo-Wop-Gesangsgruppe, die ursprünglich 1959 in New York, NY, USA, als Harbor-Lites gegründet wurde. Jay Traynor hatte zuvor mit den The Mystics gesungen. Jerry Leiber und Mike Stoller entdeckten die Band 1961 bei einem Vorspiel und so bekamen sie im selben Jahr einen Schallplatten-Vertrag bei United Artists Records (einem Tochterunternehmen der Filmgesellschaft United Artists). Im Herbst 1961 erschien unter dem neuen Bandnamen mit Tonight aus der West Side Story ihre erste Single.

Nachdem 1962 mit David Black ein neuer Sänger eintrat, gelangen etliche Erfolge. Die zweite Single She cried erreichte 1962 eine Nummer-5-Platzierung in den US-Charts. Nach wechselnder Besetzung erreichten sie mit Come a little bit closer einen beachtlichen Platz 3 im Jahre 1963, gefolgt von Let´s lock the door (Platz 11) und Think of the good times im Jahre 1965.

Nach Cara mia (Platz 4) begannen sie erfolgreich Oldies zu covern, Some enchanted evening, u.a. von Perry Como, Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby und The Temptations interpretiert, erreichte Platz 13, gefolgt von Neil Diamonds erstem Songwriter-Erfolg Sunday and me (Platz 18) und Roy Orbisons Crying (Platz 25) sowie einer Cover-Version von This magic moment der Drifters, die mit einer Platz-6-Positionierung sogar erfolgreicher als das Original war.

In den 70ern wurde es dann ruhiger um die Gruppe, Walking in the rain erreichte Platz 19. Zwei Band-Mitglieder, die 1969 dazugestoßenen Donald Fagen und Walter Becker, gründeten daraufhin die ebenfalls erfolgreiche Band Steely Dan.

Die letzte Hitparaden-Notierung stammt aus dem Jahr 1970, danach zerfiel die Gruppe. Im Jahr 2002 wurde sie in die Vocal Group Hall of Fame aufgenommen.
