Jean-Baptiste Labat (* 1663 bei Paris; † 6. Januar 1738 in Paris) war Missionar, Plantagenbesitzer und Reiseschriftsteller.

Leben und Wirken

Jean Baptiste Labat trat 1684 in den Dominikanerorden ein und ging 1694 als Missionar nach Westindien. Dort besaß er eine Plantage, auf der er sich Sklaven hielt und Rum brannte. Später wurde er zum Generalprokurator der Mission seines Ordens in Ostindien ernannt, von wo er 1705 nach Europa zurückkehrte.

Seine Reisereportagen aus der Neuen Welt waren sehr plastisch gehalten und in Europa bis in die Neuzeit beliebt.

Jean-Baptiste Labat starb am 6. Januar 1738 im Alter von 75 Jahren in Paris und wurde im Jakobinerkloster der rue Saint-Honoré bestattet.
