John Cornforth

Sir John Warcup 'Kappa' Cornforth (* 7. September 1917 in Sydney, Australien) ist ein australischer Chemiker und Nobelpreisträger. Cornforth ist seit seiner Jugend taub, aufgrund von Otosklerose. Trotz der Krankheit begann er im Alter von 16 Jahren organische Chemie an der Universität von Sydney zu studieren. 1937, mit 20 Jahren, beendete er erfolgreich und mit Auszeichnungen das Studium. Ein Jahr nach dem Studium erhielten Cornforth und seine spätere Frau Rita Harradence ein Stipendium in Oxford bei Robert Robinson.

Kurze Zeit nachdem Cornforth und Harradence ihr Stipendium angetreten hatten, begann der 2. Weltkrieg. Davon geprägt beschäftigte sich Cornforth hauptsächlich mit chemischen Aspekten von Penicillin. 1975 wurde Cornforth mit dem Chemie-Nobelpreis ausgezeichnet, für seine Arbeiten über die Stereochemie von Enzym-Katalyse-Reaktionen.

Cornforth ist Mitglied der Royal Society, die ihm 1982 die Copley Medal verlieh. Er forschte noch lange an der University of Sussex.
