John Dury

Johannes Duraeus, eigentlich John Durie oder Dury (* 1595 oder 1596 in Edinburgh; † 28. September 1680 in Kassel), war ein schottischer presbyterianischer Theologe.

Leben

Er studierte in Leiden und Oxford und wurde in Frankreich Hauslehrer und Prediger der englischen Gemeinde in Elbing. Hier lernte er Samuel Hartlib kennen, der mit ihm nach England ging.

Als er sich 1631 auf eine Pilgerschaft für den interkonfessionellen Frieden durch Kontinentaleuropa begab, war Hartlib sein Londoner Agent und bewahrte seine Schriften auf.

Die Einigung von Lutheranern und Reformierten war seine Lebensaufgabe. Er trat von den Presbyterianern zu den Independenten über und versuchte seit 1654 unter dem Protektorat Oliver Cromwells die Reformierten in der Alten Eidgenossenschaft, in Teilen Deutschlands sowie in den Niederlanden zu einigen. 1661 verließ er England für immer und setzte seine Bemühungen in Kassel fort. Es blieb ihm aber der Erfolg verwehrt.

Durys Tochter heiratete den Naturphilosophen Henry Oldenburg.
