Geographische Lage von Kalabo
Kalabo ist ein Ort und ein Distrikt im Nordwesten der Westprovinz von Sambia am Fluss Luanginga. Er ist Sitz der Verwaltung des gleichnamigen Distrikts mit 114.806 Einwohnern (Volkszählung 2000).
Kalabo ist bei ausreichendem Wasserstand nur auf dem Fluss, auf dem Landweg nur mit Allradantrieb zu erreichen. Die Wege von Sesheke dorthin sind tiefer Sand. Die Fähren über den Sambesi sind nicht zuverlässig. Es wird von der SADC eine Straße von Mongu nach Angola geplant. Das gesamte Gebiet ist dünn besiedelt und abgelegen bis weit nach Angola hinein.
Kalabo ist Sitz der Distrikts- und der Nationalparkverwaltung des Liuwa-Plain-Nationalparks. Es gibt eine 1.000 Meter lange Flugpiste, einen Flusshafen, einen regionalen Markt, ein Gesundheitszentrum und Schulen. Da Kalabo so schwer zu erreichen ist, kann sich der Tourismus in den Liuwa-Auen mit ihren großen Wildtierherden nicht entwickeln.
