Kindred

Eine Kindred bezeichnet in der Ethnologie die Gruppe aller Personen, die in einem verwandtschaftlichen System mit der Person (Ego) im Zentrum des Systems verwandt sind. Das heißt die Gruppe von Personen, mit denen Ego verwandt ist, die aber nie alle untereinander verwandt sind.

Eine Kindred ist deshalb auch nur selten gemeinsam aktiv, zumeist nur bei Gelegenheiten, die Ego betreffen, wie Geburt, Beschneidung, Heirat, Tod oder andere Übergangsrituale. Diese Definition geht auf den US-amerikanischen Anthropologen George Murdock (1897-1985) zurück.
