Kostanai (kasachisch Қостанай/ Qostanai, russisch Кyстанай/ Kustanai) ist die Hauptstadt des Gebiets Qostanai in Kasachstan.

Qostanai wurde 1879 gegründet.

Geographische Lage

Die Stadt liegt im Norden Kasachstans unweit der Grenze von Russland. Qostanai ist gleichzeitig Verwaltungssitz des gleichnamigen Gebiets.

Mit 249.400 (2008) Einwohnern ist Qostanai die größte Stadt in dessen Umgebung und die elftgrößte Kasachstans. In der Stadt und der Umgebung finden sich außer der kasachischstämmigen Bevölkerung auch russische und deutsche Bevölkerungsgruppen.

Verkehr

Von Qostanai aus gibt es regelmäßige Flugverbindungen nach Deutschland. Vor allem nach Hannover und Frankfurt am Main finden mehrere Flüge pro Woche statt.

Sport

Der Fußballverein Tobyl spielt in der höchsten kasachischen Fußball-Liga.
