Lamma Island (chinesisch 南丫島 Nán yā dǎo, auch Po Liu Chau) ist die drittgrößte Insel in Hongkong und Teil des Islands Distrikts von Hongkong.

Sie liegt im Südwesten von Hong Kong mit 6000 Einwohnern auf einer Fläche von 13,55 km². Es existieren regelmäßige Fährverbindungen von und nach Yung Shue Wan sowie Sok Kwu Wan.

Im Gegensatz zu Hong Kong Island und Kowloon ist diese Insel ruhig und friedlich und relativ naturbelassen. Es ist verboten, Gebäude mit mehr als drei Stockwerken zu bauen. Die Insel ist weitgehend autofrei; als KFZ existieren nur Feuerwehrfahrzeuge, Rettungsdienste und kommunale Fahrzeuge.

Die Grundstücks- und Immobilienpreise sind im Vergleich zu Hong Kong sehr niedrig. Hier findet man viele junge Leute sowie eine Gruppe von Künstlern.

Ausgrabungen aus den 1970er Jahren belegen eine menschliche Besiedlung seit 3800-3000 vor Christus.

Yung Shue Wan im Nordteil ist die am meisten bevölkerte Gegend der Insel. Vor einigen Jahrzehnten befand sich hier das Zentrum für die Fabrikation von Kunststoffen. Die Fertigungsstätten sind mittlerweile durch Gastronomiebetriebe, Händler u.ä. ersetzt worden. Die Gegend ist heute bei jungen Menschen und Auswanderern beliebt.

Im Süden der Insel gibt es einen Niststrand der gefährdeten Suppenschildkröte.

Traditionelle Feste

Die Tin Hau-Tempel sind typische religiöse Stätten in den Küstengegenden von Hong Kong. Man glaubt, Tin Hau ist die Göttin des Meeres und der Fischer, die für gutes Wetter und volle Netze sorgt. Es gibt zwei Tin Hau-Tempel auf der Insel, jeweils einen in Yung Shue Wan and Sok Kwu Wan (beide 1826 erbaut).

Das Tin Hau-Festival (am 23. des 3. Monats im Mondkalender) wird von den Fischern in Lamma gefeiert.
