Leland Bruce Sklar, auch „Lee Sklar“; (* 28. Mai 1947 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin) ist ein US-amerikanischer Bassist, Sänger und Komponist.

Übersicht
Leland Sklar hat bis heute bereits an hunderten Alben mitgewirkt. Er hat mit bekannten Größen wie Suzy Bogguss, Jackson Browne, Phil Collins, Rita Coolidge, Kris Kristofferson, Hall & Oates, Reba McEntire, Randy Newman, Dolly Parton, Carole King, Linda Ronstadt, Véronique Sanson, Rod Stewart, George Strait, James Taylor, Warren Zevon, Toto und etlichen anderen zusammengearbeitet.
Sklar entwickelte über die Jahre seinen eigenen musikalischen Stil, auch sein äußeres Erscheinen ist sehr "auffällig", ebenso wie sein Dingwall-Bass mit den fächerartig gespreizten Bünden.
Biografie
Seine Familie zog kurz nach seiner Geburt von Wisconsin nach Süd-Kalifornien. Mit 4 Jahren begann Sklar das Pianospielen zu erlernen. Er versuchte, nachdem er die Schule abgeschlossen hatte, einen Studienplatz für dieses Instrument zu bekommen, wegen der großen Zahl der Bewerber gelang ihm dies jedoch nicht. Da für Saiteninstrumente Plätze vorhanden waren, beschloss Sklar, Bass zu lernen und zu studieren. Sklar begann sein Musikstudium an der California State University, Northridge. Dort lernte er James Taylor kennen, der ihn bei einigen Shows Bass spielen ließ. Beide dachten, dass das Zusammenspiel nur von kurzer Zeit sein würde, doch als James seinen ersten erfolgreichen Hit aufnahm, wurde Sklar fester Bassist und kam in Kontakt zu anderen Musikgrößen. Dies war der Startschuss für seine lange Karriere.
In den 70'er Jahren arbeitete Sklar mit dem Schlagzeuger Russ Kunkel, dem Gitarristen Danny Kortchmar und dem Keyboarder Craig Doerge zusammen und sie wurden bekannt als "The Section". Unter diesem Namen nahmen sie zwischen 1972 und 1977 drei Alben auf. The Section wurde aber sehr häufig als komplette Begleitband gebucht, und ist somit auf vielen Alben anderer Künstler zu finden.
2007 war Leland Sklar mit Toto auf Tour, weil sich deren Bassist Mike Porcaro an der Hand verletzt hatte.
