Der Bundesstaat San Luis Potosí liegt in der nördlichen Mitte Mexikos. Er grenzt im Norden an Zacatecas und Nuevo León, im Nordosten an Tamaulipas, im Südosten an Veracruz, im Süden an Hidalgo, Querétaro und Guanajuato, im Südwesten an Jalisco und im Westen wiederum an Zacatecas. Der Großteil der Fläche wird von einem Hochplateau mit trockenem Klima eingenommen. Typische Vertreter der Vegetation sind Yucca, Agaven, Kakteengewächse (u. a. Nopal-Feigenkakteen, Orgelkakteen, Peyote) und Mesquiten, in den gemäßigten Zonen auch Eichen und Kiefern. Die höchste Erhebung erreicht 3180 m. Nach Osten fällt die Landschaft des Bundesstaates zur Küste hin ab und bildet einen Teil der feucht-tropischen Region Huasteca. Der tiefste Punkt liegt 100 m über dem Meeresspiegel.

Neben der Hauptstadt San Luis Potosí sind Ciudad Valles und Matehuala bedeutsam, in der Nähe von letzterem liegt in einem malerischen Talkessel die Geisterstadt Real de Catorce, der wichtigste Touristenanziehungspunkt des Staates.
