Mangope

Kgosi Lucas Manyane Mangope (* 1923) ist ein südafrikanischer Häuptling und Politiker. Zwischen 1977 und 1994 war er Präsident des unabhängigen Homelands Bophuthatswana. Er ist der amtierende Vorsitzende der United Christian Democratic Party (UCDP).

Mangope war ab 1. Juni 1972 zunächst Chief Minister des Homelands. Mit der Entlassung von Bophuthatswana in die formelle Unabhängigkeit am 5. September 1977 wurde Mangope von der südafrikanischen Regierung als Präsident eingesetzt. Nach einem gescheiterten Putsch verdankte er dem südafrikanischen Militär den Erhalt seiner Macht.

Unmittelbar vor den ersten Wahlen unter Einbeziehung der schwarzen Bevölkerungsmehrheit Ende April 1994 versuchten Truppen der rechtsextremen Afrikaaner Weerstandsbeweging, Mangope an der Macht zu halten und dadurch die Rückgliederung Bophuthatswanas nach Südafrika zu verhindern. Nach Auseinandersetzungen wurde Mangope am 13. März 1994 abgesetzt und eine Übergangsverwaltung unter Tjaart van der Walt und T. Job Mokgoro bereitete die Rückgliederung am 27. April 1994 vor.

Am 22. Juli 1998 wurde Mangope vom Obersten Gericht in Mafikeng in 102 Fällen des Diebstahls und in drei Fällen des Devisenbetrugs für schuldig befunden.
