Margaret Eleanor Atwood (* 18. November 1939 in Ottawa, Kanada) ist eine kanadische Schriftstellerin. Sie schreibt Romane, Essays, Kurzgeschichten und Lyrik.

Leben und Werk

Atwood verbrachte ihre frühe Kindheit in Ottawa, Quebec und Ontario, bis ihr Vater, ein Entomologe, 1946 eine Stelle an der Universität von Toronto annahm, wo sie bis zu ihrem Collegeabschluss am Victoria College lebte. Nach einem Studium der englischen Sprache und Literatur an der University of Toronto und der Harvard University, das sie 1961 abschloss, lehrte sie ab 1964 als Literaturwissenschaftlerin an verschiedenen Universitäten. Sie lebte in den USA, im Vereinigten Königreich, Frankreich, Italien und Deutschland. Heute lebt sie in Toronto. Sie ist verheiratet mit dem Schriftsteller Graeme Gibson und hat eine Tochter.

Parallel zu ihrer Tätigkeit an der Universität veröffentlichte sie ihre literarischen Arbeiten; zunächst wurde sie vor allem als Lyrikerin, später auch als Literaturkritikerin wahrgenommen. Im Jahr 1969 veröffentlichte sie ihren ersten Roman, Die essbare Frau (The Edible Woman). Bekannt geworden ist sie vor allem durch die Veröffentlichung von Der Report der Magd (The Handmaid's Tale) (englisch 1985, deutsch 1987), verfilmt von Volker Schlöndorff als Die Geschichte der Dienerin, und durch zahlreiche Kurzgeschichten.

Sie beschäftigt sich sehr viel mit der Stellung der Frau in der Gesellschaft, die oft in Form von Romanen oder Science-Fiction-Geschichten behandelt werden; aber auch mit anderen aktuellen gesellschaftlichen Problemen und Umweltfragen. Dazu kommt ihr Interesse für kanadische Geschichte und Literatur. Ihre Arbeiten wurden in mehr als dreißig Sprachen übersetzt, darunter Persisch, Japanisch und Türkisch.

Für ihren Roman Der blinde Mörder (The Blind Assassin) erhielt Atwood im Jahr 2000 den Booker-Preis; 2008 wurde sie in Spanien für ihr Lebenswerk mit dem Prinz-von-Asturien-Preis ausgezeichnet.
