Geografie

Marijampolė liegt im Süden von Litauen zu beiden Seiten der Scheschuppe (lit. Šešupė) – rund 50 km südwestlich von Kaunas und etwa 125 km westlich der Landeshauptstadt Vilnius nahe der Grenzen zu Polen und der Oblast Kaliningrad (Königsberg) in der historischen Region Sudauen (Suvalkija).

Wirtschaft und Verkehr

Die Stadt beheimatet als Zentrum einer landwirtschaftlich ertragreichen Region Produktionsstätten der Lebensmittel- und Maschinenbauindustrie (insbesondere für landwirtschaftliche Nutzung). Daneben befindet sich hier einer der größten Gebrauchtwagenmärkte Europas.
