Masinga

Philemon "Phil" Masinga (* 28. Juni 1969 in Klerksdorp) ist ein ehemaliger südafrikanischer, internationaler Fußballspieler. Er ist ein ehemaliger Spieler von Jomo Cosmos und Mamelodi Sundowns. Fußballerisch wuchs er bei Jomo Cosmos auf. Er spielte in der südafrikanischen Major League für die Mamelodi Sundowns und ging dann Richtung England, um für Leeds United zu spielen.

1996 war Masinga im Team Bafana Bafana als dieses das Finale der Fußball-Afrikameisterschaft gewann und als die südafrikanische Mannschaft in der Fußball-Afrikameisterschaft 1988 nach Ägypten Zweite wurde. "Chippa", wie er liebevoll genannt wird, schoss das Tor im Spiel von 1997 gegen den Kongo, das sich als entscheidend herausstellen sollte, denn es brachte Bafana Bafana zur Fußball-Weltmeisterschaft 1998 nach Frankreich.

Masinga repräsentierte Südafrika 58 mal in internationalen Spielen und erzielte dabei 18 Tore. 2003 wurde er als einer der Botschafter für die südafrikanische WM-Bewerbung 2010 nominiert. Südafrikanische Fans sind Masinga treu ergeben und er hat eine beträchtliche Anhängerschaft, da er weitläufig als einer der besten südafrikanischen Stürmer aller Zeiten bekannt ist.
