Die Mission San Francisco de Asís ist das älteste erhaltene Bauwerk in San Francisco und die sechste religiöse Siedlung als Teil des Camino Real in Kalifornien. Die Mission wurde am 29. Juni 1776 von Lieutenant Joaquin José Moraga und dem Franziskaner Pater Francisco Palóu gegründet , sie waren Mitglieder der Expedition de Anza. Die Mission San Francisco de Asís ("La Misión Dolorosa") steht unter der Leitung der römisch-katholischen Erzdiözese von San Francisco.

1958 entstanden hier Filmszenen für Alfred Hitchcocks Thriller Vertigo – Aus dem Reich der Toten.
