Die British thermal unit ist eine Einheit der Energie. Ihr Einheitenzeichen ist Btu oder BTU, ihr Formelzeichen W. Die Btu gehört nicht zum SI-System und ist definiert als die Wärmeenergie, die benötigt wird, um ein britisches Pfund Wasser von 63 Grad Fahrenheit auf 64 Grad Fahrenheit zu erwärmen.

1 Btu = 252 cal = 1055 J
1 MBtu = 1.000 Btu
1 MMBtu = 1.000.000 Btu = 1055 MJ = 293,06 kWh

Bei der Spezifizierung von Wärmepumpen (speziell Klimaanlagen) wird oft die Kühlleistung (fehlerhaft) in Btu angegeben. Gemeint ist hier BTU pro Stunde (BTU/h).

1000 BTU/h = 293 W

Auch für zu kühlende Geräte von Rechenzentren wird die in Wärme abgegebene Verlustleistung in BTU/h angegeben.

Der Erdgas-Verbrauch wird manchmal auch in mmBTU (million British thermal units; mm kommt von tausend tausend) angegeben. 1 mmBTU entspricht 26,4 Standard Kubikmeter Gas, basierend auf einem Energieinhalt von 40 Megajoule/m³.
