James Burnet, Lord Monboddo (* 25. Oktober 1714 im Monboddo House, Kincardineshire, Schottland; † 26. Mai 1799) war ein schottischer Advokat und Literat.

Leben

James Burnett, Lord Monboddo war ein schottischer Richter, Gelehrter für Sprachentwicklung und Philosoph. Er wird heute als Begründer der modernen vergleichenden historischen Linguistik geschätzt (Hobbs, 1992). Im Jahre 1767 wurde er Richter am Court of Session, dem Supreme Court of Scotland. Danach nahm Burnett einen Titel an, der sich auf das Besitztum seines Vaters, nämlich Monboddo House, bezog. Einige Gelehrte vertreten die Meinung, dass Monboddo das Konzept der Evolution vor Darwin entwickelt hat (Watt, 1985), (Bailey, 2005), (Cloyd, 1972).
