Bei der Mononeuritis multiplex (gr. monos allein; neuron Nerv; lat. multiplex vielfach) handelt es sich nicht um eine einzelne Erkrankung sondern um eine Reihe von komplexen Syndromen, die unter diesem Begriff zusammengefasst werden. Leitsymptom ist eine meist schmerzhafte, asymmetrische, periphere sensomotorische Neuropathie, wobei mindestens zwei verschiedene Nervenareale betroffen sein müssen. Anfangs sind diese meist multifokal gelegen, mit Progredienz der Erkrankung durch fortschreitende Axondegeneration kommt es aber mehr und mehr zu symmetrischer Verteilung der betroffenen Nervengebiete.

Die Ursachen sind vielfältig, beispielsweise können nekrotisierende Vaskulitiden, Lupus erythematodes, Diabetes mellitus, Amyloidose und viele andere Krankheiten zugrunde liegen. So kann sie beispielsweise auch paraneoplastisch oder infektiös (z.B. HIV, CMV, Herpes zoster, Neuroborreliose) bedingt sein.
