Das Kleinelsterchen (Spermestes cucullatus oder Lonchura cucullata) ist eine Vogelart aus der Familie der Prachtfinken. Sie ist in Afrika südlich der Sahara beheimatet. Sie fehlt lediglich im Südwesten.

Das Kleinelsterchen erreicht ausgewachsen eine Körpergröße bis zu 9 Zentimeter und zählt damit zu den klein bleibenden Prachtfinkenarten. Wie die anderen Arten der Gattung der Elsterchen ist ihr Gefieder schwarz-Weiß. Der Schnabel ist oberseits dunkelgrau und unterseits hellgrau. An der Brust befinden sich vereinzelt weiße Federn. Die Schwanzunterseite ist weiß-dunkelgrau gesperbert. Der Gesang dieser Art ist leise und schnell zwitschernd.

Schwarzelsterchen sind Freibrüter, die ihr Nest mit Kokos- und Sisalfasern sowie weichen Gräsern und Federn auspolstern. Das Gelege besteht aus vier bis sechs Eier. Die Brutdauer beträgt 12 bis 13 Tage.

Haltung als Ziervogel

Kleinelsterchen gelten als einfach in der Pflege. Sie werden seit langem erfolgreich nachgezüchtet. Sie benötigen eine Innenvoliere und Raumtemperaturen, die konstant oberhalb von 15 Grad Celsius liegen.

Systematik

Die Gattungszuordnung innerhalb der Familie der Prachtfinken ist umstritten. Eine Reihe von Autoren sehen sie in der Gattung der Elsterchen und dies ist die Zuordnung, der hier gefolgt wurde. Andere Autoren ordnen sie den Bronzemännchen (Lonchura) zu.
