Global Ocean Biodiversity Initiative

Die Global Ocean Biodiversity Initiative ist eine internationale Kooperation, um die wissenschaftlichen Grundlagen für den Schutz der Biodiversität in der Tiefsee und auf dem offenen Meer zu legen.

Das Netzwerk geht auf eine Initiative des Deutschen Bundesamtes für Naturschutz (BfN), der IUCN, des UNEP World Conservation Monitoring Centre (UNEP-WCMC), des Marine Conservation Biology Institute (MCBI), Census of Marine Life, Ocean Biogeographic Information System (OBIS) und des Marine Geospatial Ecology Lab der Duke Universität zurück. GOBI wurde hauptsächlich von der IUCN mit Unterstützung des BfN weiterentwickelt.

Ziel ist es, Daten zu sammeln, Methoden weiter zu entwickeln und ökologisch wertvolle Gebiete zu identifizieren. Der Fokus liegt auf der offenenen See, die nicht unter nationale Hoheit fällt.

Ein weiteres Ziel ist es Entwicklungsländern bei der Umsetzung der „Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD)“ zu helfen. Dazu gehören die Reduzierung von Biodiversitätsverlusten und die Etablierung eines Netzes von repräsentativen Meeresschutzgebieten bis 2012.
