Keenan-Land

Keenan-Land ist der Name einer Phantominsel in der Beaufortsee, ungefähr 550 km nördlich von Alaska.

In den 1870er Jahren berichtete der Walfänger John Keenan, er sei mit seinem nach einem Sturm manövrierunfähigen Schiff an einer unbekannten Insel gestrandet, wo er die US-amerikanische Flagge gehisst habe. Nach seiner Rückkehr wurde die Insel nach ihm benannt.[1]

Seit 1907 scheiterten zahlreiche Versuche (u. A. durch Vilhjálmur Stefánsson und Roald Amundsen), Keenan-Land wiederzufinden oder überhaupt nördlich von Alaska Land zu sichten. Hubert Wilkins überflog 1937 auf seiner Suche nach dem vermissten Sigismund Lewanewski große Teile der Gegend und kam zu dem Schluss, dass es hier nirgends Land gebe.[2]
