Die New York Post ist eine konservative Boulevardzeitung aus New York und die älteste Tageszeitung der USA. Sie wird von der mit Rupert Murdoch assoziierten News Corporation herausgegeben.

Mit einer Auflage von bis zu 700.000 Exemplaren ist sie unter den zehn größten Tageszeitungen der Vereinigten Staaten, hinter USA Today, The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Denver Post, Chicago Tribune, Washington Post und New York Daily News.[1]

Ihre „Page six“ ist ein Sprungbrett für viele VIP-Karrieren und gilt als Auslöser des Ruhms von Paris Hilton.

Geschichte

Die Zeitung wurde 1801 von dem Politiker Alexander Hamilton, der als einer der Gründerväter der USA angesehen wird, als New-York Evening Post gegründet.

Zu Zeiten von Dorothy Schiff, die fast vier Jahrzehnte lang Verlegerin der Zeitung war, hatte diese eine liberale Ausrichtung. 1977 wurde sie von Rupert Murdochs News Corporation gekauft und bald wie alle seine Blätter auf einen konservativen Kurs gebracht. Patriotismus und ähnliche Themen werden betont. Einer der bekanntesten Redakteure der Post ist John Podhoretz, der Sohn der Neocon-Legende Norman Podhoretz.

1988 bis 1993 musste Murdoch die Zeitung vorübergehend abgeben, da der gleichzeitige Besitz diverser Medieninteressen damals noch beschränkt war.

Derzeitiger Herausgeber ist „Mini-Mogul“[2] Lachlan Murdoch, der jüngere der beiden Söhne von Rupert Murdoch.

Die New York Post ist nicht zuletzt dank des Kampfpreises von 25 US-Cents (2000 von 50 Cents halbiert) wachsend, gilt aber als traditioneller Verlustbringer (von Business Week auf 15 bis 30 Mio. US-Dollar pro Jahr geschätzt), während die konkurrierende Daily News schwarze Zahlen schreibt.
