Pacific Games

Die Pacific Games (früher: South Pacific Games) sind regelmäßig im südpazifischen Raum stattfindene Sportwettkampfveranstaltungen. Sie wurden auf Vorschlag von Dr. Sahu Khan eingeführt und erstmals 1963 in Suva (Fidschi) ausgetragen. Wesentlichen Anteil am Erfolg der Spiele hatte der erste Director of Organisation, F.J. Coyne.

Der Ablauf ist sehr stark an den der Olympischen Spiele angelehnt (Eröffnungszeremonie, Flagge, Einzug der Athleten...)

M. Turukawa, Kugelstoßerin aus Fidschi, war die erste Gewinnerin einer Goldmedaille bei den South Pacific Games. In insgesamt 60 Entscheidungen gewann Fidschi 34 mal Gold. Im Jahr 2007 diente das Fußballturnier der South Pacific Games als erste Runde des OFC Nation-Cups.

Die letzten South Pacific Games fanden 2007 auf Samoa statt. Nach der Abschlussveranstaltung am 8. September 2007 wurde der Name der Spiele geändert in Pacific Games.[1] Die nächsten Pacific Games (zum ersten mal mit neuem Namen) werden 2011 in Nouméa, Neukaledonien veranstaltet werden.[2]

Bisher wurden bei 13 Pacific Games seit 1963 6.396 Medaillen vergeben. 24 Nationen konnten dabei Medaillen erringen. Die mit Abstand erfolgreichste Mannschaft ist die neukaledonische, die insgesamt 1.636 Medaillen gewinnen konnte, davon 655 Goldmedaillen.

Die Platzierungen sind nach der Anzahl der gewonnenen Goldmedaillen sortiert, gefolgt von der Anzahl der Silber- und Bronzemedaillen. Weisen zwei oder mehr Länder eine identische Medaillenbilanz auf, werden sie alphabetisch nach dem Staatsnamen genannt.
