Die Papilla duodeni major, Papilla Vateri oder Vatersche Papille (nach Abraham Vater) ist eine kleine Erhebung mit einem Schließmuskel, dem Musculus sphincter Oddii, an der gemeinsamen Mündung von Hauptgallengang (Ductus choledochus) und Bauchspeicheldrüsengang (Ductus pancreaticus) in den Zwölffingerdarm (Duodenum).

Der Musculus sphincter Oddii (Syn. Oddi-Sphinkter, Musculus sphincter ampullae hepatopancreaticae) ist ein glatter, ringförmiger Schließmuskel, welcher durch seinen Kontraktionszustand die Entleerung der Galle aus dem Ductus choledochus und des Sekrets der Bauchspeicheldrüse aus dem Ductus pancreaticus major in den Zwölffingerdarm reguliert. Benannt ist er nach Ruggero Oddi (1864.1913), einem italienischen Chirurgen.
