Antennen mit einem „pencil beam“ haben also einen sehr schmalen Öffnungswinkel und somit einen sehr großen Antennengewinn. Pencil-Beam-Antennen finden Verwendung als Feuerleitradar. Echte 3D-Radargeräte der Luftverteidigung strahlen ebenfalls pencil beams ab.
