Presidents' Day

Washington’s Birthday, oder auch Presidents’ Day (dt. Tag der Präsidenten und Präsidentinnen) wird in den USA jeweils am dritten Montag im Februar gefeiert.

Ursprünglich wurde der 22. Februar als Nationalfeiertag begangen, der Geburtstag von George Washington, Held des Unabhängigkeitskrieges und erster Präsident der Vereinigten Staaten. Außerdem war in den meisten US-Bundesstaaten auch noch der 12. Februar ein Feiertag, der Geburtstag von Abraham Lincoln, dem Präsidenten während des Bürgerkrieges.

Mitte der 1970er Jahre beschloss der Kongress, einen Feiertag zu Ehren aller US-Präsidenten einzurichten. In den meisten US-Bundesstaaten, wie auch im Bundesgesetz, wird dieser Feiertag jedoch weiterhin Washington’s Birthday (dt. Washingtons Geburtstag) genannt. Die meisten Schulen in den USA bringen ihren Schülern an diesem Tag etwas über die amerikanischen Präsidenten bei.
