Quadruped

Quadrupedie (lat. quadrus vier und pes Fuß) bezeichnet bei landlebenden Wirbeltieren (Tetrapoden) eine vorwiegend auf alle vier Extremitäten gestützte Lebens- und Fortbewegungsweise. Dies ist der plesiomorphe Zustand für die Landwirbeltiere, wurde aber bei einigen Gruppen sekundär wieder erworben (z. B. ceratopside Dinosaurier).

Eine evolutive Fortentwicklung der Quadrupedie ist Bipedie, die zum Beispiel von Hominiden, manchen ausgestorbenen Krokodil-Verwandten und vielen Dinosauriern sowie den Vögeln entwickelt wurde.
