Samarinda ist die Hauptstadt der indonesischen Provinz Kalimantan Timur (Ost-Kalimantan) auf der Insel Borneo. Sie liegt am Fluss Mahakam, einige Kilometer vom Mündungsdelta entfernt. Der Mahakam ist der Hauptverkehrsweg ins wenig erschlossene Hinterland. Samarinda ist ein wichtiges Zentrum für den Holzhandel in Kalimantan, dem indonesischen Teil der Insel Borneo. Die Stadt hatte bei der letzten Volkszählung eine Einwohnerzahl von 334.851.

Geografie

Die Stadtverwaltung ist für ein 718 km² großes Gebiet zuständig, das neben Samarinda selbst auch zahlreiche Dörfer umfasst. Das Stadtgebiet wird komplett vom Verwaltungsbezirk Kutai Kerta Negara umschlossen.

Die Kernstadt befindet sich in einer Tallage auf Schwemmland; die Außenbezirke Samarindas liegen größtenteils auf Hügelland und erhöhten Ebenen.
