Satmar

Satmar (חסידות סאטמאר) ist eine Bewegung von ultraorthodoxen, chassidischen Juden, die in der Stadt Szatmárnémeti (heute: Satu Mare, Rumänien) entstand, die bis 1920 zu Ungarn gehörte.

Ideologie

Hauptmerkmal von Satmar heute ist die strikte Ablehnung jedes weltlichen Zionismus, der nicht vom Messias persönlich angeführt wird.

Anhängerschaft

Die Anhänger werden als Satmar-Chassidim bezeichnet. Die größte Zahl der Anhängerschaft lebt in Williamsburg (Brooklyn) in New York City, gefolgt von Kiryas Joel (New York), Boro Park (Brooklyn) und Monsey (New York) sowie anderen ultraorthodoxen Ballungszentren in Nordamerika, Europa, Israel und Argentinien.

Zwar existieren keine offiziellen Statistiken, es wird jedoch angenommen, dass Satmar über 120.000 Anhänger hat und damit eine der größten Bewegungen des heutigen Chassidismus ist.

Sonstiges

Der Satmarer Rebbe war für lange Zeit traditionell der Vorsitzende von Jerusalems Edah HaChareidis (einer ultraorthodoxen Gemeinschaft in Jerusalem), obwohl keiner der früheren Rabbiner permanent in Jerusalem gelebt hatte; diese Tradition endete im Jahr 2006 mit dem Tod des langjährigen Satmar-Rebbe Moshe Teitelbaum.
