Second Division

Die Bezeichnung Second Division beschreibt im Sport zumeist die zweithöchste Spielklasse einer Ligahierarchie. Oft steigen die schwächsten Vereine nach Abschluss einer Saison in eine niederklassigere, zumeist dritthöchste Liga (Third Division) ab und erhalten im Ausgleich die bestplatzierten Vereine aus dieser darunter liegenden Spielklasse. Darüber hinaus steigen oft die bestplatzierten Vereine am Ende einer Spielzeit in einer darüberliegende Liga, zumeist eine First Division, auf. In einigen Ländern ist die Second Division nicht mehr die zweithöchste Liga, nachdem sie durch die Einführung zusätzlicher (Profi-)ligen ersetzt und um jeweils eine Stufe nach unten verdrängt wurde.

Wichtige Second Division-Ligen im englischsprachigen Bereich sind:

  • Football League Second Division, englische Second Division (zur Zeit als Football League Two die vierthöchste Spielklasse in England)
  • Scottish Football League Second Division, schottische Second Division (aktuell die dritte schottische Liga)
  • Welsh Football League Second Division, walisische Second Division (dritte walisische Liga, neben der es parallel noch drei weitere dritte walisische Ligen gibt)
  • Isthmian League Second Division, englische Amateurliga auf der insgesamt neunten Ebene des englischen Fußballs

Der Begriff Second Division hat auch eine historische Bedeutung im Baseball, obwohl dort, wie in allen anderen populären US-amerikanischen Sportarten, eine Regelung zum Auf- und Abstieg nicht existiert.
