Die originalen Nilpferdpeitschen, auch Sjambok, werden aus Flusspferdehaut (wegen ihrer starken Strapazierfähigkeit) hergestellt. Aufgrund des Artenschutzes wird jedoch mittlerweile oftmals harter, elastischer Kunststoff verwendet.

Das gängige Modell für den Reitsport ist ca. 90 cm lang und relativ unelastisch. Von Dompteuren wird bevorzugt die elastische Variante mit bis zu 7 Metern Länge verwendet. An der Spitze befindet sich ein kleiner Lederball. Dieser verstärkt die von der Peitsche angewandte Kraft und ist somit besonders für Dickhäuter geeignet.
