Adult Contemporary (AC) bezeichnet ein bestimmtes, weit verbreitetes Radioformat, bei dem ausschließlich Mainstream und Popmusik gespielt wird, die möglichst genau dem aktuellen Zeitgeschmack entspricht (daher contemporary, zu deutsch zeitgemäß), ohne allzu spezielle, auf Jugendliche ausgerichtete Strömungen (z. B. aus den Genres Hip-Hop oder Independent) zu integrieren (daher adult, zu deutsch erwachsen). Angesprochen werden sollen Hörer zwischen 25 und 50 Jahren. In der Praxis gibt es sehr unterschiedliche Ausprägungen.

Musikstile

Die Titel und Interpreten müssen eine möglichst breite Akzeptanz beim Publikum haben, so dass hier ein Repertoire (ca. 400 bis 800 Titel in der Rotation) eingesetzt wird, das sowohl junge als auch erwachsene Hörer anspricht. In der Regel werden die Hits der letzten 20 Jahre gespielt. Das Klangbild ist melodisch geprägt und leicht durchhörbar. Häufig gibt es längere Musicsweeps (drei oder vier Titel ohne Unterbrechung).

Typische Interpreten für ein AC-Format sind beispielsweise Cher, Elton John, Phil Collins oder die Pet Shop Boys.

Moderation

Der Stil ist freundlich und verbindlich. Die Sprechbeiträge sind meist nicht länger als zwei Minuten und stark servicebezogen. Standardmäßig ist die Moderation kurz und positiv gehalten. Häufig werden aufwändige (Gewinn-)Spiele zur Hörerbindung eingesetzt.
