Sustainable Churches

Sustainable Churches ("nachhaltige Kirchen") heißt ein von der UNESCO ausgezeichnetes Programm katholischer und evangelischer Einrichtungen in Deutschland, durch das diese bis zu einem Jahr lang ihre Wirtschaftsweise prüfen lassen.

Das Projekt basiert auf den Prinzipien eines Umweltmanagements nach der europäischen Norm EMAS (Eco Management and Audit Scheme) sowie auf dem von der Europäischen Kommission entwickelten Konzept CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility). Beide verlangen einen ökologisch vorbildlichen Umgang mit Ressourcen wie Wasser, Strom, Benzin und Heizöl. Bei "Sustainable Churches" kommen soziale und wirtschaftliche Kriterien hinzu.

Das EU-LIFE-Programm und die Deutsche Bundesstiftung Umwelt unterstützen „Sustainable Churches“; die Kontaktstelle für Umwelt und Entwicklung e.V. (KATE) koordiniert das Projekt.
