Banjarmasin ist die Hauptstadt der Provinz Südkalimantan, Indonesien, mit etwa 560.000 Einwohnern (2005). Die Stadt befindet sich auf einer Deltainsel in der Nähe der Mündung der Flüsse Barito und Martapura. Deshalb wird Banjarmasin auch "River City", also "Fluss-Stadt" genannt.

Banjarmasin besitzt einen wichtigen Tiefwasserhafen, von dem aus Pfeffer, Kohle, Erdölprodukte, Gold, Diamanten usw. exportiert werden. Auch gibt es Kohlebergwerke und Erdölraffinerien im Umfeld der Stadt. Die Stadt wird regelmäßig von Hochwassern heimgesucht und geflutet. Die Stadt verfügt über eine staatliche Universität (Universitas Lambung Mangkurat, UNLAM).

Geschichte

Im 14. Jahrhundert war Banjarmasin ein Teil des Hindukönigreiches Majapahit, später wurde das Reich von Moslems erobert. Die Niederländer begannen mit ihrem Handel im Jahre 1606. Danach kontrollierten die Briten die Stadt für einige Zeit, und im Jahre 1787 wurde die Stadt bis zur Unabhängigkeit von Indonesien zu einem niederländischen Protektorat.
