Therapeutic Drug Monitoring

Drug monitoring (deutsch: Medikamentenüberwachung) ist eine in der Medizin gebräuchliche Bezeichnung für die Messung der Konzentrationen von Medikamenten im Blut.

Im klinischen Alltag wird Drug monitoring eingesetzt, um die Dosierung von Medikamenten mit einer geringen therapeutischen Breite wie Digoxin oder Aminoglykoside zu überwachen. Besonders bei verminderter Nieren- oder Leberfunktion und bei Medikamenten, die leicht über- oder unterdosiert werden können, ist das Drug monitoring bei der Ermittlung der optimalen Arzneimitteldosis hilfreich. Darüber hinaus wird Drug monitoring genutzt, um die Patienten-Compliance zu überprüfen, z. B. bei der Anwendung von Psychopharmaka.

In der Pharmakologie dient das Drug monitoring der Erforschung pharmakokinetischer Kenngrößen von Arzneistoffen wie Resorption, Elimination etc.

In der Intensivmedizin und Toxikologie wird Drug monitoring angewandt, um Vergiftungen mit Arzneimitteln nachzuweisen oder auszuschließen und deren Schweregrad einschätzen zu können.
