Die Total S.A. ist ein französisches Mineralölunternehmen mit Hauptsitz in Courbevoie.

Es ist das viertgrößte Mineralölunternehmen und das insgesamt achtgrößte Industrieunternehmen der Welt. Mit einem Umsatzvolumen von 158,8 Mrd. € und einem Gewinn vor Steuern von 13,5 Mrd. € (Stand: 2007) ist es das viertgrößte Unternehmen der Branche (Stand: 2008). Total beschäftigt in 130 Ländern derzeit (2008) etwa 96.400 Angestellte. Das deutsche Tankstellennetz umfasst nach Unternehmensangaben über 1.000 Stationen.

Geschichte

1980 betrieb TOTAL in Westdeutschland 313 Tankstellen, davon 173 mit Selbstbedienung.

1999 übernahm die französische Total den belgischen Konkurrenten Petrofina. Im Jahr 2000 fusionierte schließlich die entstandene Totalfina mit dem alten französischen Rivalen Elf Aquitaine. Das Unternehmen hieß für kurze Zeit TotalFinaElf. Die Aktivitäten von Total umfassen die Rohöl- und Erdgasförderung, Energieerzeugung und -transport sowie die Produktion verschiedener Chemikalien.

Die Aktie der Total S.A. gehört dem Börsenindex CAC40 an und ist an der New York Stock Exchange und der Euronext in Paris notiert.

Menschenrechtsverletzungen beim Pipelinebau in Myanmar (Birma)

Für den Bau einer Gaspipeline von Myanmar (früher Birma) nach Thailand durch Total und Unocal (Yadana-Projekt) sollen, um die Pipeline vor Überfällen zu schützen, die Dörfer in diesem Gebiet weiträumig zerstört und die Bevölkerung umgesiedelt worden sein.[1] Die belegten Fälle von Zwangsarbeit, Vertreibung und Mord führten zu einem Prozess gegen Total in den USA.
