Der United States Automobile Club (USAC) wurde 1955 als Motorsportverband gegründet, nachdem die American Automobile Association aufgrund der schweren Unfälle in Indianapolis und Le Mans den Automobilrennsport nicht mehr organisierte.
USAC-Gründer war der Besitzer des Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Tony Hulman. Abgesehen von der höchsten Klasse, den Champ Cars, wurden auch Sportwagenrennen, Sprint-car-, Midget-car- und Stock car-Rennen ausgeschrieben.
Ende der 1970er Jahre kam es zu einer Krise, nachdem Hulman gestorben und die Führungsspitze des USAC 1978 bei einem Flugzeugabsturz ums Leben gekommen war. Die Besitzer der meisten Rennteams, die schon zuvor die Politik des USAC kritisiert hatten, nahmen das Heft in die Hand und gründeten die Championship Auto Racing Teams (CART), um die Saison 1979 zu organisieren. Es kam zum Konflikt, die CART-Teams erzwangen per Gerichtsentscheid die Zulassung zum Indy 500 1979. Man einigte sich dahin, dass CART die Meisterschaftssaisons organisierte und der USAC das Indy 500 als deren wichtigsten Teil.
Als 1996 der Indianapolis-Besitzer Tony George die Indy Racing League gründete, übernahm der USAC zunächst die Organisation, wurde aber nach Zeitnahmeproblemen in Texas von der Funktion entbunden.
