United States Attorney General

Der United States Attorney General, deutsch Generalbundesanwalt der Vereinigten Staaten, ist Mitglied im Kabinett der Vereinigten Staaten und steht dem Justizministerium der Vereinigten Staaten vor, ohne jedoch den Titel Minister (Secretary) zu tragen. Zu seinen Aufgaben gehören die Rechtsberatung der Regierung, die Kontrolle der Strafverfolgungsbehörden und die Vertretung der Vereinigten Staaten vor Gericht. Er wird vom Präsidenten mit Zustimmung des Senats ernannt.

Das Amt des Attorney General wurde 1789 vom Kongress der Vereinigten Staaten geschaffen. Seine ursprünglichen Aufgaben umfassten die Verfolgung und Vertretung in allen Rechtsstreiten vor dem Obersten Gerichtshof, in denen die Vereinigten Staaten Partei sind. Außerdem soll er den Präsidenten und die Minister im Kabinett in allen Rechtsfragen beraten. Ein eigenes Justizministerium wurde erst 1870 zur Unterstützung des Attorney General geschaffen.

Heute werden die meisten Vertretungsaufgaben vor Gericht durch den United States Solicitor General wahrgenommen. Der Attorney General selbst verhandelt vor dem Obersten Gerichtshof nur noch in Fällen von außergewöhnlicher Bedeutung.

Amtierender Attorney General ist seit dem 3. Februar 2009 Eric Holder.
