Virus-like particle

Virus-like particles (VLPs, deutsch Virusartige Partikel) sind Viruspartikel, die biotechnologisch hergestellt werden. Sie enthalten keine viralen Nukleinsäuren und sind daher nicht in der Lage, sich in den Zielzellen zu vermehren.

VLPs werden in der Virologie und in der Immunologie benötigt, um Viren und Zellfunktionen zu untersuchen. Diese Partikel sind nicht leer, da sie sonst instabil werden würden, sondern es werden entweder unspezifisch Nukleinsäuren verpackt oder nicht funktionelle DNA bzw. RNA. Außerdem können gezielt Proteine verpackt werden.

Medizinische Anwendungen

Manche Impfstoffe enthalten Virus-like particles, so beispielsweise die HPV-Impfstoffe. VLPs rufen oftmals eine sehr effiziente B- und T-Zellantwort hervor.
