Viscount Gort ist ein erblicher britischer Adelstitel in der Peerage of Ireland, benannt nach der Familie Gort.

Verleihung

Der Titel wurde 1816 an John Prendergast-Smyth verliehen, ein langjähriges Mitglied des irischen House of Commons und Gouverneur des Countys Galway.

Da Prendergast-Smyth unverheiratet war, erfolgte die Verleihung mit dem besonderen Vermerk, dass der Titel auf den Sohn seiner Schwester Juliana Verecker übergehen könne.

Nachgeordneter Titel

Der erste Viscount war bereits 1810 zum Baron Kiltarton of Gort im County of Galway, ebenfalls in der Peerage of Ireland, ernannt worden. Dieser Titel, der nunmehr als nachgeordneter Titel geführt wird, war mit demselben speziellen Vermerk zugunsten des Neffen Thomas Verecker versehen wie die Viscountswürde.

Weiterer Titel

Der sechste Viscount John Vereker war ein berühmter britischer Offizier in beiden Weltkriegen. Er wurde 1946 einen Monat vor seinem Tode zum Viscount Gort, of Hamsterley im County Durham, ernannt. Dieser Titel gehörte zur Peerage of the United Kingdom.

Da er zum Zeitpunkt seines Tode keine männlichen Abkömmlinge hatte, erlosch dieser Titel -anders als die irischen- mit seinem Tod.
