Waiheke ist eine Insel in Neuseeland, knapp 18 km von Auckland entfernt. Sie ist nach der Great-Barrier-Insel die zweitgrößte Insel im Hauraki-Golf. Die stark gegliederte Insel ist 92 Quadratkilometer groß, ihre Ost-West-Ausdehnung beträgt 19,25 km, während die Nord-Süd-Ausdehnung nur 9,65 km ausmacht. Es gibt 19 Buchten, überwiegend mit feinkörnigen Sandstränden. Vorwiegend im westlichen Teil des Eilands leben ständig ca. 8000 Einwohner. In der Hochsaison können es mehr als doppelt so viele sein, weil dann zahlreiche Leute vom Festland ihre Ferienhäuser belegen. Es gibt auf der Insel mehrere Weingüter.

Infrastruktur

Die Überfahrt mit der Fähre dauert 35 Minuten und kostet für einen Erwachsenen mit Rückfahrt $NZ 32,00 (Stand Januar 2010). Am Fährhafen in Waiheke kann man Autos und Fahrräder mieten, um die Insel zu besichtigen. Außerdem gibt es einen regelmäßigen Busverkehr. Straßen gibt es fast nur im ausgebauten Westteil der Insel. Wanderwege sind gut ausgeschildert.
