Ein Website Management System (WMS) ist ein spezialisiertes System zur Pflege einer Website. Es wird zur Betreuung von Internet- und Intranetseiten eingesetzt.
Wichtiges Merkmal ist die Trennung von Inhalten und Gestaltung. Ein WMS erlaubt auf einfache Weise Änderungen an der Struktur, die Navigation bleibt dabei immer konsistent und wird jeder Änderung automatisch angepasst.
Inhalte lassen sich leicht, meist direkt im Browser ändern oder hinzufügen. Die Gestaltung (Design) wird in der Regel über Vorlagen (Templates) gepflegt. Wobei sich Änderungen automatisch auf alle Inhalte auswirken, die diese Vorlage benutzen.
Der Unterschied zwischen WCMS und WMS lässt sich am ehesten so beschreiben:
Bei einem WCMS wird vorhandener Inhalt (Content) in Form einer Website gebracht. Bei einem WMS ist das Ziel eine Website, diese wird mit vorhandenem und neuem Inhalt (Content) befüllt.
Oft wird auch die Kurzbezeichnung Web Manager für ein WMS benutzt.
